Cancel It — Privacy Policy

Last updated: July 2026

Cancel It is a Chrome extension that hides, blurs, or replaces words and topics you choose on the webpages you visit. This policy explains exactly what data the extension accesses, what it stores, and what — if anything — ever leaves your device.

Data the extension reads

To find your chosen words on a page, Cancel It's content script reads the visible text and image metadata (alt text, titles) of pages you visit. This scanning happens entirely inside your browser. Page content is never transmitted anywhere, stored outside your browser, or seen by us.

Data the extension stores

The following is stored only in your Chrome browser profile (via chrome.storage), synced by Chrome across your own signed-in devices the same way your bookmarks are — never sent to our servers:

Anonymous usage statistics (opt-in, off by default)

Settings → Support has a toggle called "Share anonymous usage stats." It is off by default. If you turn it on, Cancel It sends anonymous feature-usage events to Google Analytics (GA4) so we can see which features are actually used and improve the built-in keyword packs. This is the only way any data ever leaves your device.

Sent when the toggle is onNever sent
Which filtering style / scope you use, whether a pack is turned on or off, custom pack names, keywords you add to a pack, and counts (e.g. number of site rules) Your main blocklist, temporary mutes, any page text, any URL or website you visit, your PIN, or your identity

These events are tied to a random identifier generated on your device — not your Google account, email, or any other identity. Google's use of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy. You can turn the toggle off at any time to stop future collection; past events already sent to Google Analytics are retained under Google's standard retention settings. To request deletion of previously shared data, contact us using the details below.

Keyword packs and custom pack names are user-entered text, so if you type something personal into a pack name or keyword while this toggle is on, that text is included. If you'd rather it never be sent, leave the toggle off — the extension works identically either way.

What we do not do

Permissions

Cancel It requests storage to save your settings, activeTab so the toolbar popup can show which site you're on, and host permissions on all sites because filtering only works on a page the content script can read. None of these permissions are used to collect or transmit data beyond what's described above.

Data retention and deletion

All locally stored data (blocklist, settings, stats) is deleted automatically when you uninstall the extension, or immediately if you clear it yourself from the Activity section or your browser's extension storage settings.

Children's privacy

Cancel It includes an optional "Family controls" PIN feature intended to help households share a device, but the extension does not knowingly collect data from children and does not distinguish user ages.

Changes to this policy

If what Cancel It collects changes, this page will be updated and the "Last updated" date above will reflect that.
